1. Unchained
My slaves are my property. I treat them well; I give them food and clothing. I take care of them, the way I do with the rest of my property. Of course, they still have to do their work. For my husband and I, the slave auction was cause for excitement. He seemed a bit surly, but he was muscular and strong. I was sure he would make an excellent addition to our cotton plantation once his attitude changed. But when we tried to teach him the proper way to behave, he didn't cooperate very well. He said that he had bought his freedom before he was recaptured. He was angry that we were trying to enslave him again. And he would do anything to be free.
3. Release
Things were getting tense on the cotton plantation. Slave uprisings were happening across the country, and the two words on everybody's lips were "Underground Railroad." As the master's wife, I didn't believe the slaves had the right to even dream of being free. That kind of life wasn't meant for those people. When I caught two of our biggest, strongest slaves plotting to run away, I didn't hesitate to make myself known. I didn't think about the fact that it was late at night and no one else was around. They explained to me why they had to leave - the terrible things my husband had done. I told them they were still our property. But it was two against one. And my power was of no use anymore. By the time I tried to run, it was already too late.
